Proper dental hygiene is achieved through disciplined
use of preventative dental health practices such as brushing, flossing
and keeping regularly scheduled appointments with your dentist and hygienist.
When your dentist or oral hygienist cleans your
teeth they are doing your whole body a great service. Ridding your mouth
of the bacteria in your mouth is a great way to prevent tooth
decay as well as many other health related problems. As we have
discussed on the tooth decay page, bacteria
are living organisms that basically use our mouth as a toilet. These
bacteria build up over time and only your dental health professional
can fully scrape them from your teeth.
When you do go to get your teeth cleaned, make sure
that you are seeing a registered dental hygienist. Most dentists do
not receive the extensive training in the detection and treatment of
periodontal disease, while a Registered Dental Hygienist spends most
of his/her schooling studying and treating this disease.
Good dental hygiene starts at home. Make sure that
you and your family brush three times a day and floss once a day. Also,
try to avoid foods containing sugar or at least make sure to brush after
eating any of these foods.
